Giovanni Pitruzzella (Italian Competition Authority) : Antitrust in a changing world

You were appointed President of the Italian Competition Authority in the midst of the economic crisis – in your view, how is this crisis affecting the institutional design of the Eurozone ? The crisis that broke out in 2007 in the United States as a private financial crisis, and which spread out to Europe as a crisis of sovereign debts and of the Eurozone institutional architecture, cannot be viewed simply as a stage of the economic cycle. Rather, it seems to mark the end of the balance among the market, democracy and social cohesion that has characterized the long political and constitutional experience after the Second World War.
