OPENING KEYNOTE SPEECH
MAKAN DELRAHIM
The conference opened with a keynote delivered by Makan Delrahim (Assistant Attorney General, US Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, Washington, DC), regarding the economic liberty and the rule of law in the context of international competition policy.
Mr. Delrahim focused his speech on three topics : First, how competition enforcement plays an important role in the free market system ; second, the progress that the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice (Antitrust Division) has made in sharing the value of effective competition enforcement throughout the world ; and third, his views on future developments in international competition enforcement.
Throughout his address, Mr. Delrahim emphasized the fundamental role of the rule of law and procedural fairness in the application of competition law. In emphasizing the connection between entrepreneurial spirit and the foundation of the U.S., Mr. Delrahim asserted that a well-functioning free market economy is the engine of opportunity that enables entrepreneurship and rewards innovation, and that competition enforcement plays a critical role in ensuring that this engine remains in good order for the benefit of all.
