The UK Government publishes proposals designed to restrict foreign investment

Last week, the UK Government published new proposals designed to restrict foreign investment in the UK and to potentially block securities listings on UK public markets, in each case on grounds of national security. Foreign investment controls On 11 November 2020, the National Security and Investment Bill (the "NSI Bill") was introduced to the UK Parliament. The NSI Bill is separate from the existing UK merger control regime and would give the Government power to scrutinise foreign investments in the UK that involve the acquisition of control over certain types of entities and assets, on the grounds of national security. The proposed changes envisaged by the NSI Bill apply to investors from any country and primarily to investments and acquisitions in critical sectors of the UK
