The Indian Competition Authority approves an acquisition in the power and grid sector (GE / Alstom)

The GE-Alstom deal, while still caught in crosshairs of the European commission, was approved by the Competition Commission of India (CCI/Commission) on 5 May 2015. [1] The order is yet another illustration of increasing enforcement in merger control in India. Notably, the decision highlights the importance of procedural technicalities in Indian merger control and the Commission’s arguable narrow interpretation of the same. Background The transaction pertained to the acquisition of Alstom’s worldwide power and grid business. [2] GE first announced its proposal to acquire Alstom’s business on 30 April 2014.
