The Italian Competition Authority opens an investigation into an alleged ferry cartel in the strait of Messina (Caronte&Tourist, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana)

Following the receipt of many complaints filed by several passengers between 2009 and 2013 reporting steady increases in the fares applied by ferry operators in the Strait of Messina, the Italian Competition Authority (ICA) has recently opened an Article 101 TFEU investigation [1]. The proceedings focuses on price-fixing and market sharing practices allegedly carried out by a number of ferry operators: Caronte&Tourist (CT), Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) and its subsidiary Bluferries, Meridiano, Terminal Tremestieri (TT), Metromare and Ustica Lines.
