The Italian Competition Authority fines the main suppliers of jet fuel in the Italian market for anticompetitive practices (Rifornimenti Aeroportuali)

On 9 April 2004, a complaint concerning alleged anticompetitive practices on the market for the supply and storage of jet fuel was lodged before the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (hereinafter, the “NCA”). According to the complaint, major oil companies controlled the storage and supply of jet fuel at Italian airports through different joint ventures. Allegedly, this behaviour allowed jet fuel suppliers to keep their market shares and prevent new entries on the market. The undertakings concerned by the aforesaid complaint were the former Italian monopoly in the energy sector, ENI, as well as the Italian subsidiaries of some the main multinational companies active in this same sector : Esso,
