Healthcare providers, such as general practitioners, pharmacists, physiotherapists, providers of exceptional medical care under the Exceptional Medical Expenses Act, hospitals and convalescent centres are undertakings. The same applies to suppliers of medical aids, pharmaceutical wholesalers and private health insurers. The Dutch Competition Act applies to all these healthcare providers. As of 1 January 2006, the Healthcare Act came into force which resulted health insurers to be regarded as undertakings in terms of the Competition Act as well. The number of concentrations in the healthcare sector has increased during recent years.
