The Czech Competition Authority inflicts a record fine of €35 million in the gas insulated switchgears market in spite of leniency (GIS cartel)

On 9 February 2007, the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition (the «Office») rendered a decision in the gas insulated switchgears («GIS») cartel case, imposing fines of a total amount of CZK 979 million (€ 35 million approx.) on the manufacturers. The cartel, which has been investigated by numerous other competition authorities, including the European Commission, was disclosed to the Office in a leniency application by one of the parties, ABB.
