The Italian Competition Authority applies the bidding markets analysis to block a merger in the market for the gas distribution services (Italgas / Acegas-APS / Isontina Reti Gas)

By a decision made on 17 April 2013 the Italian Competition Authority (ICA) has prohibited the Italgas and Acegas-APS acquisition of the joint control of Isontina Reti Gas (IRG). The ICA believed that the notified transaction would strengthen the dominant position of Italgas and Acegas-APS in a number of markets for the award of gas distribution contracts and accordingly blocked the merger. The ICA decision IRG is a utility trading in North-Eastern Italy. Through the notified merger, two major energy and utility groups, Italgas and Acegas-APS intended to acquire the control of IRG from Eni and Acegas-APS in two steps.
