Valérie Demedts

Since May 2021, Valérie Demedts is working for the city of Ghent as team coach, decision making. Prior to that, for four years, Valérie Demedts was a professor of EU Competition Law at Ghent University. Between 2017 and 2021 she also worked at the Belgian Competition Authority as a case-handler. She holds a Master of Law from Ghent University (2010, Great Distinction) as well as a Master of Arts in EU External Relations and Diplomacy from the College of Europe in Bruges (2011, Great Distinction). In the framework of these studies she respectively wrote a thesis on software interoperability in European competition law, and a thesis on the communication policy of the EU with a case study on the climate change negotiations in Copenhagen in 2009. During an Erasmus exchange program she studied at Université Paris Descartes in Paris. She was a summer intern at the Brussels office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in 2010 and a ‘stagiaire atypique’ at the Directorate-General Competition within the European Commission in 2015. The research interests of Valerie Demedts concern European and Belgian competition policy and EU external relations.
