Judge Fabian Hoffmann has served as a judge of Bundesgerichtshof (Federal Court of Justice) in Karlsruhe, Germany since 2010. He is a member of the 10th Civil Division (X. Zivilsenat) which has, inter alia, jurisdiction on patent dispute matters. Before this appointment, he was a Judge at the Oberlandesgericht (Higher Regional Court) in Frankfurt am Main, where he still lives. Before his appointment as Judge, he was an Assistant Lawyer admitted to the Bundesgerichtshof in Karlsruhe, drafting submissions on civil law appeals held before the Bundesgerichtshof. Judge Hoffmann studied law at the JohannWolfgang-Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In year 1980/1981, he was an exchange student in New Jersey, USA. He is a member of the Expert Group of European Commission on licensing and valuation of Standard Essential Patents. In this group, he is especially interested in establishing licensing mechanisms for SEP, the judicial handling of such parents and patents valuation.
