Georgiana Pop

Georgiana Pop is leading the World Bank’s Global Markets and Competition Policy team, with a portfolio of advisory and lending operations in more than 60 countries. She is an economist and practitioner with extensive experience on competition policies, state aid, state-owned enterprises, macroeconomic and structural policies. She led advisory projects on private sector development and competition, authored competition policy assessments, developed analytical tools, led publications on the role of competition policies for shared prosperity and growth, and was a technical competition lead of lending operations in more than thirty low – and middle-income countries from Europe and Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Caribbean. Her work focuses on competition and regulation at sectoral level in transport, telecommunications, agriculture, antitrust enforcement, and evaluating the effects of State-owned enterprise and subsidies on market outcomes to improve contestability. Georgiana published articles on competition in the United States and Europe and was a lecturer on competition and industrial organization in university graduate programs and training programs for competition authorities. Prior to joining the World Bank, Georgiana specialized in industrial organization and competition policies in emerging economies from South East Europe at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, the European Commission (Bucharest) and the Competition Council of Romania. Georgiana holds post-graduate degrees in economics from the Columbia University (United States), the National School of Politics and Public Administration and the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest (Romania).
