Peter Kalbfleisch

From July 2005 to July 2011, Pieter Kalbfleisch has been Chairman of the Board of the Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa). From 22 September 2003 until July 2005, Pieter Kalbfleisch was the Director-General of the NMa. Born in 1947, he studied law at the Law Faculty of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. After his graduation in 1972, he began his career as an attorney-at-law in Arnhem. On joining the Bar in Haarlem as an attorney-at-law, he decided to change his career and joined the bench of the Court of Haarlem. This change gave him the opportunity to specialise in criminal and civil law. In 1986 he was appointed Deputy Presiding Judge of the Court of The Hague, where he also specialised in family and juvenile law. Until recently he was the Acting Presiding Judge of the Court of The Hague. In addition, he also carried out administrative tasks. Until his appointment as the Director-General of the NMa in 2003, he was the Chairman of the Arbitration Board of ’Overbruggingsfonds Toneel’ (Bridging Fund for Drama) in The Hague and Chairman of the Professional Football Appeals Board of KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Federation) in Zeist. He was also a member of the Executive Board of ’Nederlandse Vereniging voor Rechtspraak’ (Netherlands Association for the Judiciary). In addition, he served as an arbitrator for ’Nederlands Arbitrage Instituut’ (Netherlands Arbitration Institute) in Rotterdam. He has also been a law tutor and advisor to the Business Studies course and Management Programmes in Haarlem and a tutor in Insolvency Law and the Law of Procedure with the Dutch Bar Association. He has published various articles on matters relating to family, juvenile and criminal law.
