João E. Gata is currently principal advisor at the Portuguese Competition Authority (PCA/AdC). Before his current position he served as Director of the PCA’s Bureau of Economic Studies and Market Monitoring and as the Authority’s Chief-Economist for several years. Before that, and starting in January 2004, he worked as a senior economist in the PCA’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) department. He also served as director-general in the Portuguese Ministry for Environmental Affairs between 2006 and 2007. He has been an economics faculty member at the University of Aveiro in Portugal since 2001. He holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon, a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota/USA and a Post Grad Diploma in European Union Competition Law from King’s College/London/UK.
