He practices EU and Spanish competition law, focusing on cartel defense and merger control work in a variety of sectors. He is particularly active in the electricity and gas markets. Mr. Ruiz Calzado began his legal career in 1988 working as an adviser on EU affairs to the Catalan Government in Barcelona. From 1991 to 1997 he practiced in the Barcelona and Brussels offices of a leading Spanish law firm. He authored the chapter on "Cartels" in Competition Law of the European Community, Matthew Bender (Lexis-Nexis). Mr. Ruiz Calzado has been a regular speaker at the Masters Program in EU and National Competition Law at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and at the "Escuela Iberoamericana de la Competencia", the seminar for members of Antitrust Agencies from Latin America, which is hosted by the Spanish Competition Authority.
