Head of Unit and Advisor

Claes Bengtsson is head of unit in the Chief Economist Team at DG Competition since 2019 and principle advisor in the DG TAXUD since January 2022. He has over nineteen years of economics experience at the European Commission. Dr. Bengtsson received a Ph.D. in Economics from studies at University of Copenhagen and at Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. After graduation, he worked as Head of Section at the Danish Ministry of Finance for two years. Then, he joined the European Commission and held several positions such as Deputy Chief Economist, Deputy Head of Unit - Mergers, Member of Cabinet of Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht, Member of Cabinet of Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager, and finally, Head of Cabinet for Commissioner for Competition - Margrethe Vestager.
