In 1968 Dr Bernhard Heitzer gained a degree in Economics at the University of Regensburg. From 1973 to 1976 he was Assistant Lecturer at the Chair of Theoretical Economics at the University of Bielefeld where in 1976 he was awarded a doctorate in Economics and Social Sciences. He held various positions in the Federal Ministry of Economics, which he joined in 1977. From 1987 to 1989 he was Personal Adviser to Federal Economics Minister Dr Martin Bangemann. From 1991 to 1996 he headed the sections “Economic Research/Deregulation/ Debureaucratisation” and “General Economic Policy Issues/New Federal States”. From 1996 to 2004 he headed various sub-departments in the Ministry of Economics, including “General Energy Policy Issues, Mineral Oil, Economic Issues of Climate Protection” and “General Policy and Sectoral Issues of Industrial Policy”. Dr Bernhard Heitzer has been President of the Bundeskartellamt since 1 April 2007. Before joining the Bundeskartellamt he was President of the German Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle (BAFA) (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control) for three years.
