Environmental protection and economic development are challenges of major importance in today’s society. Each of these areas influences the evolution and efficiency of the other, so that it is their very interaction that is today a central issue for their own and common future.

This book aims to examine this interaction in European Union law in a novel way. The analysis of this current problem, anchored in a detailed study of European Union legislation and case law, is, in particular, based on a sector that is emblematic of the main issues at stake in this interaction: the waste sector.

In this respect, the book highlights the emergence of a new conception of waste, which has both an environmental and an economic component, which will have to coexist, in law, in accordance with the principle of integration and sustainable development, through a necessary conciliation mechanism.

The implementation of this conciliation mechanism is examined in an original way, both in environmental law and competition law.

The analysis thus carried out is systematically applied to the waste sector, which has not been the subject of any study carried out so far from this perspective.

Offering an unprecedented, detailed, theoretical and pragmatic study of the now inescapable problem of the interaction, in law, between economic and environmental issues, this book will be a valuable tool for academics, practitioners, public authorities, companies and, more generally, anyone interested in this subject of major importance in our society.
