Marc VAN DER WOUDE (GCEU): The reform of the General Court for a better and faster judicial review

The reform of the General Court of the European Union foreseen by Regulation 2015/2422 was completed in September 2019. With the doubling of the number of its judges, the General Court is in a situation to ensure that even the most complex cases are dealt with efficiently, coherently and in a reasonable timeframe. The newly elected President of the General Court, Marc van der Woude, depicts the main decisions adopted to accompany this important change and discuss the main challenges his jurisdiction will face going forward.

To begin with the structure of the General Court itself, a number of changes have recently been introduced in the organization of the Court following the enlargement of its college. Could you explain for our readers what impact those changes will have on the functioning of the General Court? The third and last phase of the reform foreseen by Regulation 2015/2422, allowing for the doubling of the number of judges at the General Court (two judges appointed per Member States), was completed in September 2019. The General Court adopted several organisational measures at the end of last year to support its enlargement and make sure the reform delivers concrete results in terms of effective judicial protection for European citizens.
