Robert Mahnke (PayPal): Antitrust and e-payments

Recently appointed Global Competition Counsel at PayPal, Robert Mahnke offers his point of view on the evolution of the competitive marketplace and explains how the sector operates. He particularly stresses the leading role of innovation and the challenges the company will face in the future.

You recently became Global Competition Counsel for PayPal when it split from eBay. Before that you held the same position for all of eBay. Have the matters you are concentrating on changed? My job has changed quite a lot in the last year. I’ve managed to find myself with a new job, in a new place and for a new employer, without having had to send out resumes or interview. “These businesses got pulled into interesting investigations in the e-commerce space, for example involving MFNs and vertical restraints” For five years, I was the sole competition lawyer for eBay Inc., which was the parent to some different businesses, including what is now eBay, PayPal, and businesses we acquired as GSI Commerce and rebranded as eBay Enterprises.
