The deployment of optic fiber network in France (Paris, 8 November 2011)

The optic fiber is being deployed by using a large part of the civil engineering infrastructures (the ducts) built between 1965 and 1995. These infrastructures have been financed by the Administration des Postes and later by France Télécom within the framework of their successive monopolies, until 1998. Currently, their maintenance represents only a fraction of the price of their availability within the framework of the local loop unbundling. The adaptation of this price to the costs effectively supported for the maintenance and the renovation of the infrastructure can thus impact substantially the geographical extension of the optic fiber and, thereby, the need for the local authorities or for the State to subsidise the deployment of this new network in the less dense areas.
