The Italian Competition Authority examines commitments regarding the functioning of Google News (FIEG / Google)

Facts Google offers several online services such as a search tool, Google News, Google Maps, or Gmail, many of which are available for free. Google Inc. operates in Italy, partly through its subsidiary Google Italy S.r.l. In Italy, in July 2009, the Italian Federation of Newspaper and Periodical Publishers (Federazione Italiana Editori Giornali, hereafter FIEG), acting on behalf of its members, asked the national competition authority to investigate Google News Italia, a service which aggregates and indexes news using automated systems. This service provides users with a selection of news published in Italian on 250 websites, which is frequently updated.
