Synthesis

Frédéric Jenny delivered the opening keynote speech and introduced the topic of the webinar. He first mentioned the challenges that the competition community has had to deal with over the past months in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid-19 crisis has called into question the relevance of competition law enforcement. Market failures have increased, due to the simultaneous break down of the supply chains and increase of the demand on several markets for essential goods, and the gap between the supply and the demand for a number Covid-19-related goods has had negative externalities, contributing to the spread of the pandemic. Also, lockdown (the only public policy option available to limit the spread of the virus) has had a critical impact on international production chains.
