State aid and judicial review: An overview of EU and national case law

1. Introduction The EU courts have rendered a number of important judgments during the past two years, many of which have been controversially discussed. This Special Issue is a compilation of case annotations published by Concurrences which will certainly be a useful tool for practitioners, public authorities, as well as public and private companies. It is my pleasure to contribute a foreword to this piece of work and to highlight the most important findings of the EU courts in this overview. A detailed discussion of the EU courts’ findings can then be found in the respective case annotation. Before starting to write this foreword, I took a moment to think about which judgment of the years 2012 and 2013 I consider to be the most relevant development in the field of State aid law.
