Market definition in the digital economy: An overview of EU and national case law

Many of the major recent European competition proceedings, which also attracted siginificant public attention, concerned companies in the digital economy. The most prominent cases include the mergers of Facebook with WhatsApp and Instagram, cases of abusive behavior such as the Google Shopping or the Google Android case, the German cases concerning the hotel booking platforms HRS and Booking as well as the recent decision of the German Federal Cartel Office against Facebook. Further investigations are currently underway, such as those concerning Amazon or Apple and Spotify and it is to be expected that there will be more cases in the future.
