On 20 July 2021 the UK government launched a consultation on a wide range of far-reaching changes it is proposing to the UK competition and consumer protection regimes. As a result of Brexit the UK is now in a position to decide, independently from the EU Commission, how it promotes and enforces competition law affecting UK markets. The CMA can be expected to conduct more investigations, many of which will be strategically significant to the UK’s economy and more complex than those previously undertaken by the CMA. The government is therefore keen to ensure that the CMA has the resources, powers and procedures to deal with these cases as effectively and efficiently as possible.
