Background In its decision of 25 August 2009 [1], the Turkish NCA authorized the acquisition of “Tekel Birası” brand of MEY İçki by Anadolu Efes Biracılık (Efes), the dominant company in Turkish beer market. “Tekel Birası” is the first national beer brand created by TEKEL, the state-owned enterprise which used to be the sole producer and distributor of all alcoholic beverages, tobacco products and salt. The alcoholic beverages branch of TEKEL has been privatized on 27 February 2004 and MEY İçki acquired this branch.
