The EU Commission adopts new State aid guidelines for environmental protection

"Helping to combat climate change: new State aid guidelines for environmental protection"* In a bid to meet the ambitious environmental targets the EU has set itself in its quest to combat climate change, on 23 January 2008, the Commission tabled a series of legislative proposals for policy measures addressing this issue. This ‘energy and climate change package’ [1] included a proposal amending the EU emissions trading Directive [2] and a proposal for a Directive promoting renewable energy [3]. As part of that package, the Commission also adopted new State aid guidelines for environmental protection (hereinafter ‘Guidelines’).
