Italian Competition Authority, Case n° A418, Decision n° 20116, Lega Calcio, 22 July 2009

Since July 22, 2009 the Italian Competition Authority is investigating the sale of lucrative television rights to soccer matches in the country's top league, Lega Calcio, because it suspects such rights have been packaged to benefit incumbent pay-TV operators and not viewers (Case n° A/418 of July 22, 2009). It seems that the investigation has started by the initiative of Conto TV S.r.l., a small broadcasting company operating satellite TV in Italy. Italy's Lega Calcio soccer association, which includes the top Serie A clubs, defended its action in a statement, saying it had stuck to the provisions of the Law n° 9/2008
