The EU Commission clears, subject to divestiture, an acquisition in the tobacco industry (Imperial Tobacco/Altadis)

"Mergers: Main developments between 1 September and 31 December 2007"* On 18 October the Commission cleared the proposed acquisition of the Franco-Spanish company Altadis by Imperial Tobacco of the UK. The Commission’s decision is conditional on the divestment of a number of tobacco brands in certain national markets for roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco and cigars where the Commission identified competition concerns.
