The Helsinki District Court awards significant damages against asphalt cartel (‘Asphalt cartel damages claims’)

The Helsinki District Court has awarded significant damages for losses caused by a national asphalt cartel. This marks the end of the first phase of the biggest Finnish private enforcement case thus far. The Court heard 41 damages claims together and issued separate judgments the majority of which involved damages awards. The city of Helsinki was awarded 9.3 million euro and interest, to be paid by a road construction company and the bankrupt estate of another one, as compensation for excessive prices paid for road construction contracts over a period of several years. Earlier, in the context of public enforcement of competition law, the defendant companies had been found to have participated in the cartel.
