The German electricity market is dominated by four vertically integrated firms: E.ON, RWE, Vattenfalland EnBW exclusively able to cover both base load and peak load demand. Regional and local retailers, often municipality owned (Stadtwerke), sell electricity to final customers or other local and regional retailers. In 2003 E.ON Mitte AG, 73 per cent of which are held by E.ON Energie a 100 per cent subsidiary of E.ON AG (E.ON), intended to purchase 33 per cent of the shares of Stadtwerke (municipal utility) Eschwege. The shares of latter are held by the municipality of Eschwege. Stadtwerke Eschwege provide, inter alia, electricity to final consumers and two regional retailers of electricity.
