On 1 May 2012 the Competition Commission (CC) published its decision on the anticipated joint venture between Anglo American PLC and Lafarge SA in the market for construction materials. The CC concluded that the proposed joint venture would give rise to a substantial lessening of competition in relation to the supply of bulk cement as well as in a number of local and national markets for other products including asphalt and ready-mix concrete (RMX). In order to address these concerns, rather than prohibit the transaction, the parties will be required to sell an extensive package of operations so as to facilitate the entry into the UK cement market of a new player.
