The Portuguese Government reaches a Memorandum of Understanding with EU and IMF on granting financial assistance subject to specific economic and competition policy conditions

Introduction On May 3rd 2011 the Portuguese Government reached an agreement with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund regarding a Memorandum of Understanding on specific economic policy conditionality for granting financial assistance to Portugal (henceforth MoU). The MoU lays down quite an extensive programme of economic and fiscal commitments to be implemented by Portugal, specifying detailed criteria that will be assessed for the successive reviews up to the end of the programme in 2013.
