The Russian Parliament issues a federal law on foreign investments in companies having strategic importance for state security and defense

The new Federal Law of the Russian Federation on Foreign Investments in Companies Having Strategic Importance for State Security and Defence, n° 57 - FZ (new law), signed by then - president Vladimir Putin on April 29, is effective from 7 May 2008 in Russia. In brief, the law will require foreign investors to obtain approval from an executive body prior to acquiring ownership over certain Russian enterprises. The overall purpose of the new legislation is to regulate foreign investment into companies which are operating in a number of sectors which are regarded as being strategic important by reference to securing the defence of the country and the security of the state.
