The Romanian Competition Council clears 3 mergers in the retail sale market (Carrefour/Artima - Delhaize/La Fourmi - Auchan/MGV)

During the past years the Competition Council (the “Council”) was engaged in quite an intense activity of merger clearance, as the constant growth of Romanian economy attracted both national and international investments. A significant increase was registered particularly on the market of retail sale by modern formats of trade : hyper and supermarkets, discounters and even cash & carry. Most of the major European players from this sector entered the Romanian market, either directly or through partnerships with local or foreign investors. Their expansion on the market intensified in the period 2008 - 2009, when 3 cases of economic concentrations between retailers have been submitted to the Council.
