1. The sale process of Tirrenia and the proceeding before the European Commission The present concentration concerns the sale of the main assets of the shipping company Tirrenia, previously controlled by the Italian State. Due to the economic and financial difficulties suffered by Tirrenia, on August 2010 the Italian State declared the extraordinary administration of the latter and initiated a competitive and transparent procedure in order to select a possible buyer of certain assets of Tirrenia, including its main routes and the ships. The selected company for the acquisition of the assets of Tirrenia was Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (CIN), participated and controlled by the three main competitors of Tirrenia in the shipping sector in Italy (Moby, Marinvest and Grimaldi).
