The Croatian Parliament adopts new competition law

On 24 June 2009, the Croatian Parliament (Hrvatski sabor) adopted new competition law, which will be enforced by the Croatian Competition Authority (Agencija za zaštitu tržišnog natjecanja) (AZTN) from 1 October 2010. The adoption of the new law pursued two primary aims: 1) further harmonization of the Croatian competition law with the EC standards; and 2) improving the effectiveness of the competition law enforcement by enhancing the powers of the AZTN and streamlining the procedural rules for adoption of the administrative decisions and their challenge before the judiciary. During 2004-2008, the AZTN established violation of competition law in more than 100 cases.
