The Irish Competition Authority cleared a merger in the fresh mushrooms market (Carbury Mushrooms/Monaghan Middlebrook Mushrooms)

Introduction On 26th January 2004 The Irish Competition Authority produced the results of it's investigation into Monaghan Middlebrook Mushrooms Limited acquiring 100% shareholding in Carbury Mushrooms Limited. The report was self-initiated following a newspaper report [1] regarding the proposed merger. The concern of the Authority was that in one mushroom company taking over another, there may be significant anti-competitive effects on the market. The Authority intended to investigate the impact of the proposed merger where the activities of the parties overlapped within Ireland. The Parties Monaghan Middlebrook Mushroom Limited is a private company. It is involved in the marketing of mushrooms within the UK and Ireland, and in the production of Phase 2 compost [2].
