"European Energy Sector — Quo Vadis? First results of the Sector Inquiry"* The energy sector is of fundamental importance to the European economy, and to the well-being of citizens of the European Union. Debate about the future direction of European energy policy has been vigorous for most of the last decade, and will likely be intense during 2006. Within the framework of the decision by the Commission to open a sector inquiry in the gas and electricity markets, DG Competition has carried out an investigation into the state of competition in those markets.
