COVID-19 pandemic: ESA approves prolongation to Norwegian compensation scheme for cancelled and downscaled cultural events*

The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has today approved a prolongation of a Norwegian scheme providing compensation for losses related to cancelled or downscaled cultural events.

The scheme compensates eligible organisers and sub-contractors for costs and losses incurred on ticketed cultural events that had to be cancelled or downscaled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scheme was initially approved in May 2021 to cover events planned for the period 1 January to 30 June 2021. In September 2021, ESA approved amendments to the scheme to cover losses incurred between 1 July to 31 October 2021.

ESA has now approved Norway’s prolongation of the scheme until 30 June 2022. The budget of the scheme remains the same, at NOK 425 million (EUR 41 million).

The prolonged scheme is approved in line with the European Commission’s Temporary Framework for state aid measures to support the economy in the current COVID-19 outbreak.
