The Romanian Competition Authority publishes a study on the effects of big data on competition

Background The decision to conduct the study [1] is justified by the rapid evolution of digital markets and the limited information available at national level regarding the functioning of digital markets. The study illustrates the growing interest of competition authorities around the world in the analysis of the effects of Big Data (“BD”) on competition. Significance Completing two and a half years of research, the study is a first important step of the Romanian Competition Authority (“RCA”) towards a better understanding of the implications of BD technologies on competition. The initiative of the RCA could be anticipated, given that, already since 2016, the EU Competition Commissioner Vestager has publicly stressed that “Europe’s competition enforcers need to work together on big data
