The EU General Court dismisses four appeals in calcium carbide and magnesium reagents cartel case (Novácke chemické závody, Ecka Granulate, Almamet, 1. garagtovaná)

On 12 December 2012, the General Court (“GC”) dismissed appeals by four undertakings against a Commission decision fining them for their involvement in a cartel affecting the supply of calcium carbide and magnesium reagents. The Commission’s July 2009 decision imposed fines of € 61 million on nine companies for their participation in a price-fixing and market-sharing cartel for calcium carbide powder, calcium carbide granules and magnesium granulates. All of the companies concerned lodged appeals with the GC to challenge the Commission’s decision. On 12 December 2012, the GC handed down its judgments on appeals brought by four of the cartel participants: Novácke chemické závody, Ecka Granulate, Almamet, and 1. garagtovaná. The General Court dismissed the four appeals in their entirety.
