The Portuguese Competition Authority clears a merger between tour operators (Escalatur / Nortravel)

On March 23rd 2018, the Portuguese Competition Authority (PCA) was notified of a merger where Escalatur – Viagens e Turismo, Unipessoal, Limitada (Escalatur), a company within the Barceló Group, which operates in the tourism sector and is active in various countries, aimed to acquire exclusive control over Nortravel – Agência de Viagens e Turismo, S.A. (Nortravel), a company that offers tour services through its subsidiary Jade Travel Lda. (Jade Travel) – case Ccent 18/2018. The notification was made under Article 37(1.c) of the Portuguese Competition Act, which determines that concentrations are subject to prior notification whenever the combined annual turnover in Portugal of the companies involved in the merger exceed €
