The Commission autorizes a jointly operated linear polyethylene plant between Exxon and Shell in the petrochemical sector* The Commission has authorized under the provisions of Article 85(3) of the EC Treaty a production joint venture and related agreements beetween Exxon Chemical Polymerss SNC (a French affiliate of the Exxon group) and Shell Chimie S.A. (a French affiliate of the Shell group) in the polyethylene sector. The joint venture is named "Companie Industrielle des Polyéthylènes de Normandie" (CIPEN) and is situated at Notre-Dame-de-Gravenchon (NDG) in France where an Exxon integrated petroleum/chemical complex is also situated. The production capacity of the plant is of 0,2 million tons a year while the total production of low density polyethylene within the EC is about 5.5
