Vanessa has a broad practice advising her clients on merger clearance, cartels and other antitrust matters before the European Commission and other regulators. Prior to joining Allen & Overy, Vanessa was General Counsel and Executive Vice President, Company Secretary at Visa Europe, and a member of the Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Competition. She has a wealth of experience from the European Commission and the financial services sector and also has particular experience in the IT and air transport sectors, having been involved in important cases in these areas. Before joining the Commission, Vanessa spent eight years as a partner in a leading Brussels antitrust practice. Vanessa is regularly invited to speak at high-profile conferences on antitrust and competition matters. Relevant former experience includes advising Neelie Kroes, the former EU Commissioner for competition policy, on a range of antitrust and merger cases and policy, including leading IT cases, airline mergers, cartels and cooperation with other competition authorities around the world, in particular the U.S. FTC and DOJ. Vanessa has been identified by Global Competition Review’s independent research with clients and peers as being among the world’s leading competition lawyers.
