Paulien Van Sande

Bird & Bird (Brussels)
Lawyer (Associate)

Pauline Van Sande is a junior associate both in the Competition & EU practice and in the Regulatory & Public Affairs team in Brussels, where she mainly focuses on the intersection between competition law and sectoral regulations, especially in the digital sector. She started at Bird & Bird in 2017 as a trainee, and in 2019 she became a junior associate in the Competition & EU practice. Her work spans all areas of competition law, from antitrust and merger control to State Aid and also includes advice concerning sector regulation. She has a particular focus on the regulatory initiatives for the European Commission relating to the Digital Single Market and the impact of these developments on clients in the technology & communications sector. Her focuses on this sector, allows her to have a broad view of the changes that are occurring quasi-simultaneously. Due to the link between the regulatory initiatives and ongoing competition law cases she comes up with some original suggestions in competition law cases, outside the traditional remit of the competition toolbox. Before joining Bird & Bird, she completed several internships in the competition departments of various international law firms in Brussels and gained valuable experience by completing a long-term internship with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This helped her to gain some insights into the workings of public administrations. This proved to be helpful in the regulatory & public affairs work she assists with, because it allows her to better understand and predict what is going on behind the scenes.
