Mario holds a PhD in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, where he specialized in the fields of industrial organization and the economics of institutions. His PhD thesis analyzed how firms choose to differentiate themselves in competitive settings. Specifically, he developed an empirical model to examine retailers’ location decisions. That research was the springboard for this article and for Mario’s general interest in understanding the expansion strategies of retailers.
