Philip is an associate in the Arbitration, Real Estate and Construction Disputes team. He specialises in construction and engineering dispute resolution and has experience in High Court litigation, adjudication, international arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution including mediation. Philip Apfel regularly advises employers, contractors and other construction professionals on domestic and international construction projects on a broad range of issues including delay, defects, design liability, payment and termination. Prior to joining the firm, he completed his Bachelor of Laws at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and his postgraduate Legal Practice Course at the University of Law, where he wrote his dissertation in competition law. He has worked for BCLP’s International Arbitration and Construction Law teams in London, and is currently sitting with BCLP’s Antitrust & Competition Law team in Brussels. Philip speaks German, Mandarin Chinese and English.

In March 2020 the World Health Organisation declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, and governments around the globe imposed lockdowns and other measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. Since then, national governments and competition authorities worldwide have had to balance the impact of the subsequent economic downturn with the need to maintain effective supply chains and the proper functioning of markets and competition. This has resulted in an unprecedented number of rapid responses and initiatives by competition agencies and governments around the world in response to the pandemic in the areas of antitrust and merger control, and in the EU on State aid.
