Commandant (retired) M. M. (Man Mohan) Sharma, started and headed the Antitrust/Competition Law practice at Vaish Associates Advocates in New Delhi, including Policy interventions division in the Firm since 2009. Mr Sharma has over 30 years’ legal and regulatory experience, both as a government counsel and as Law and Judicial officer in the Government of India (Law Officer/Judge Advocate in the rank of Commandant in the Indian Coast Guard). He has worked in Competition Commission of India (CCI) as Additional Registrar during 2006-2008 and was responsible for drafting the Implementing Regulations under the Competition Act, 2002. He has experience of working as Head-Legal /In-house Counsel for a large Corporate Group before joining VA (Vaish, Advocates) in 2009. He assisted CCI and the Government of India in amending the draft Merger Regulations as a part of the “Law Firms Working Group” comprising of all leading Law firms in India by incorporating the Industry’s concerns, as a Member of ASSOCHAM’s National Competition Council during 2011. Mr. Sharma regularly appears before Courts and before CCI and the Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT) (Now before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal) (NCLAT) as arguing counsel and has represented and advised several clients, both Indian and International, on tactical competition issues, such as anti-competitive agreements, including cartels, joint ventures, abuse of dominance cases, including obtaining CCI approvals for mergers and acquisitions in some leading corporate groups. He has many successes to his credit in cartel cases. Mr. Sharma has been mentioned as a “Notable Practitioner” in the "Competition /Antitrust" category of Chambers & Partners Asia Pacific Ranking of Leading Lawyers for Business in India. Mr. Sharma is a prolific writer and his articles on competition issues frequently appear in legal journals, both domestic and International, and also in national dailies such as The Economic Times, Financial Express, Business Standard. Mr. Sharma also teaches competition law and besides being a frequent speaker in seminars and conferences on competition laws is also a visiting faculty for competition law, among others, at the Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi and at the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India and at the National Law University, Delhi and CUTS -Institute for Regulation and Competition (CIRC). Mr. Sharma also runs an independent Blog, the Antitrust & Competition Law Blog which gives latest update on competition issues in India.
